Welcome to Binge-Watchers Podcast with Johnny Spoiler, where we dig up cult classics, forgotten horror movies, bizarre B-movies, and cinematic disasters that deserve another look.
It's Halloween, and Johnny has a simple survival guide for adults: cheap wine, pizza, try to get laid, and watch scary movies all night. Forget worrying about poisoned candy. You're an adult now. You buy your own candy and make your own questionable decisions.
Tonight we're celebrating Halloween with NIGHTWISH (1989), a surreal science fiction horror movie directed by Bruce R. Cook that combines haunted houses, dream manipulation, alien encounters, demonic possession, and some seriously disgusting practical monster effects.
And somehow, that's only half the insanity.
π NIGHTWISH (1989) MOVIE REVIEW & REACTION
An eccentric parapsychology professor takes four graduate students to an isolated mansion to experiment with dreams, death, and alternate dimensions.
Their research involves sensory deprivation tanks, experimental dream technology, and an increasingly questionable understanding of scientific ethics.
Before long, the students find themselves trapped in a nightmare filled with supernatural manifestations, mysterious green energy, alien abductions, and grotesque creatures.
But are these horrors actually happening? Are they hallucinations? Or has something taken control of their dreams?
Johnny Spoiler breaks down the movie's strangest moments, including:
β’ A surprisingly provocative opening sequence that wastes absolutely no time.
β’ Neon-soaked dream tanks straight out of an '80s music video.
β’ A completely unhinged professor whose experiments should probably be illegal.
β’ Science experiments mixed with sΓ©ances and supernatural rituals.
β’ A giant ectoplasm worm that swallows three people at once.
β’ An ending that leaves you wondering whether anybody ever woke up.
The film also features early practical effects from KNB EFX, the legendary effects company later associated with The Walking Dead and countless horror productions.
With appearances by Brian Thompson, Elizabeth Kaitan, Jack Starrett, and Robert Tessier, NIGHTWISH delivers a strange collection of recognizable genre faces and outrageous ideas.
Is this an overlooked horror masterpiece or a great concept buried beneath a confused screenplay?
Johnny's verdict: BINGE LATER.
Not quite the hidden gem we hoped for, but definitely the kind of weird horror movie that belongs in a late-night Halloween marathon.
π° HOME VIDEO HEADLINES
Before we enter the nightmare, we're checking in on the latest entertainment news.
We remember legendary actor Sir Patrick Stewart and his remarkable career, from Captain Jean-Luc Picard in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION to Professor Charles Xavier in the X-MEN franchise.
SMILE 3 is moving forward with a new creative team, including director David Bruckner, known for THE NIGHT HOUSE, THE RITUAL, and HELLRAISER, alongside screenwriter Nick Antosca.
And Philomena Cunk is returning! Diane Morgan brings her wonderfully clueless documentary persona back for CUNK ON CINEMA, a hilarious examination of movie history.
πΊ FAN SERVICE: FORGOTTEN WEREWOLF MOVIES
A listener on Instagram gives some love to our recommendations for under-the-radar werewolf movies.
Johnny revisits three titles that deserve a spot on your Halloween watchlist:
LATE PHASES (2014)
THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW (2020)
WEREWOLVES WITHIN (2021)
Not every werewolf movie needs a blockbuster budget. Sometimes the smaller, stranger monster movies deliver the biggest surprises.
πͺ STAFF PICKS: CHILD'S PLAY (1988) ON THE BIG SCREEN
After an incredibly difficult personal year, Johnny finds a little unexpected comfort in an old-fashioned trip to the movies.
His hometown theater has been screening classic horror movies for free throughout Halloween season, giving him the chance to revisit the original CHILD'S PLAY (1988) on the big screen.
Before Chucky became a wisecracking horror celebrity, he was a genuinely creepy Good Guy doll possessed by a serial killer.
Johnny reflects on the original film, practical puppetry, theatrical nostalgia, and why a great horror movie can sometimes provide exactly the escape you need.
