The Howling (1981): When Werewolves Became Terrifying Again
Then came 1981.
Werewolf movies were about to change dramatically, and The Howling was one of the movies responsible.
Directed by Joe Dante with legendary transformation effects associated with Rob Bottin, The Howling throws television reporter Karen White into a secluded retreat where something considerably stranger is happening after dark.
These aren't cute wolves.
They aren't romantic wolves.
They're monsters.
The transformation effects remain one of the movie's biggest attractions, but The Howling also has the strange humor and genre awareness you'd expect from Joe Dante.
And somehow 1981 wasn't finished with werewolves yet.
