Love It or Hate It: A Horror Movie Podcast Deep Dive into Return of the Living Dead 3

Love it. Hate it. Argue about it in the comments like it’s 1993 again.

On this episode of the Binge-Watchers Podcast, we crack open Return of the Living Dead 3—the most emotionally unhinged entry in the franchise—and ask the real question: Is this a zombie romance or a beautifully gross cry for help?

We spend a lot of time unpacking the film’s aggressively bad romance, because wow… it’s rough. But we also give the movie—and especially its director, Brian Yuzna—the credit it deserves. Yuzna is one of those cult filmmakers whose work always feels ahead of its time, wildly creative, and somehow cursed at the box office. Dude is cult royalty, yet Hollywood keeps treating him like box-office poison. Make it make sense.

The Stuff That Actually Works (And Works Hard)

One of the standout moments we keep coming back to is Riverman’s sacrifice, which somehow manages to inject genuine emotional weight into a movie full of exposed ribs and doomed lovers. It shouldn’t work—but it does.

And let’s talk zombie effects. This movie was made on a fraction of the money it should’ve had, yet the practical effects still rip. They’re gnarly, tactile, and way more effective than half the CGI sludge we get today. This thing deserved better numbers, full stop.

The Tangents (Because Of Course We Go There)

Things get delightfully sidetracked when we pivot into a discussion about the new Netflix true crime documentary on the Cecil Hotel, its missing persons case, and the building’s long list of ghost stories. That spirals—naturally—into VHS rewind trauma, video store nostalgia, and the lost art of physically returning movies on time.

Somewhere in there, we also spiral into conversations about caste systems, both American and British—largely informed by movies, TV, and vibes (we admit it). From there, we talk about why horror so often becomes the playground for stories about the little guy fighting a rigged system… and sometimes winning.

Bonus Chaos, Fan Service, and Bromance Energy

We reference our Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 episode thanks to a Viggo Mortensen connection (yes, really).

Fan Service goes completely off the rails when we respond to a listener comment from YouTube, and somewhere along the way we accidentally explain why our podcast bromance works and how these episodes come together in the first place. No spreadsheets. Just vibes and mutual horror damage.
