1. THE THING (1982)
John Carpenter + Kurt Russell + Antarctica + alien paranoia.
Do I really need to keep selling this?
A research team trapped in Antarctica discovers an alien organism capable of perfectly imitating other living creatures.
Which means anybody could be The Thing.
Your friend could be The Thing.
Your dog could be The Thing.
I could be The Thing.
Actually, considering how many terrible movies I've watched voluntarily, that might explain a few things.
What makes Carpenter's movie so endlessly rewatchable isn't simply the creature effects. It's the paranoia. Once the characters realize what they're dealing with, nobody—including the audience—knows who to trust.
And those practical effects?
Still disgusting.
Still incredible.
Still better than they have any right to be.

2. VIDEODROME (1983)
Long before everybody spent six hours a day staring into glowing rectangles, David Cronenberg asked:
What if television actually changed your body?
James Woods plays Max Renn, a television executive who discovers a mysterious broadcast called Videodrome.
Then things get weird.
Really weird.
We're talking hallucinations, body horror, videotapes, Debbie Harry and Cronenberg doing everything possible to make you uncomfortable around household electronics.
Forty-plus years later, a movie about people becoming physically and psychologically consumed by media feels strangely less ridiculous than it probably did in 1983.
JOHNNY SAYS: BINGE NOW.
Long live the new flesh.
3. HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH (1982)
The Halloween movie without Michael Myers.
Audiences hated that idea.
Johnny Spoiler does not.
The original plan was to potentially turn Halloween into an anthology franchise featuring different Halloween-themed stories instead of endlessly bringing Michael Myers back.
Season of the Witch gave us:
🎃 Killer Halloween masks.
🤖 Creepy androids.
☘️ An evil novelty company.
🪨 Stonehenge.
📺 And one commercial jingle that will permanently colonize your brain.
Eight more days till Halloween, Halloween, Halloween...
Sorry.
Now it's in your head too.

4. THEY LIVE (1988)
Roddy Piper finds a pair of sunglasses.
He puts them on.
And discovers aliens secretly controlling humanity through advertising and subliminal messages.
Obviously, the appropriate response is violence.
John Carpenter somehow combines science fiction, horror, action, professional wrestling and social satire into one movie—and gives us one of the most gloriously excessive fistfights ever filmed.
Seriously.
That alley fight just keeps going.
And going.
And going.

OBEY.
CONSUME.

5. CARRIE (1976)
Before Stephen King adaptations became their own industry, there was Carrie.
Brian De Palma directs Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, a painfully isolated teenager discovering she has telekinetic powers.
Unfortunately, the people around Carrie discover this at roughly the worst possible moment.
Everybody knows about the prom.
Everybody knows about the blood.
But knowing what's coming doesn't make watching it happen any easier.
Spacek and Piper Laurie both received Academy Award nominations for their performances, something that was especially notable for a horror movie of the era.

6. AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000)
Patrick Bateman has everything.
Money.
An expensive apartment.
Designer clothes.
A prestigious Wall Street job.
An impressive skincare routine.
And absolutely no ability to handle somebody having a nicer business card.
Christian Bale's performance transformed Patrick Bateman into one of cinema's most recognizable psychopaths, but American Psycho works because it's simultaneously disturbing and incredibly funny.
It's horror.
It's satire.
It's black comedy.
It's also possibly the only movie capable of making Huey Lewis and the News sound threatening.

Just don't touch his reservations at Dorsia.
7. HELL HOUSE LLC (2015)
Found-footage horror lives or dies by one simple question:
Did that thing in the background just move?
Hell House LLC understands this.
A documentary crew investigates a deadly incident at a Halloween haunted-house attraction inside an abandoned hotel.
The setup is simple.
The execution is creepy as hell.
And the movie understands that something silently standing where it shouldn't be can sometimes be scarier than throwing a CGI monster directly into the camera.
Watch this one at night.
Lights off.
Then stare suspiciously into the corner of your bedroom for the next four hours.

8. TERRIFIER 2 (2022)
Art the Clown has entered the chat.
And he's brought absolutely no sense of restraint with him.
Terrifier 2 helped turn Art into one of modern horror's most recognizable slasher villains while introducing Lauren LaVera's Sienna Shaw as the hero capable of standing against him.
This movie is long.
It's bloody.
It's absurd.
And it contains scenes that will make even experienced horror fans ask:
“Okay...are we STILL doing this?”
Yes.
Art is still doing it.
JOHNNY SAYS: BINGE NOW.
Maybe don't order spaghetti first.
9. TOTALLY KILLER (2023)
What happens when you combine Back to the Future with a slasher movie?
You get Totally Killer.
Kiernan Shipka plays Jamie, who travels back to 1987 and attempts to stop the Sweet Sixteen Killer before the original murders happen.
Naturally, altering a murder spree without completely destroying the future turns out to be slightly complicated.
The time-travel setup also lets the movie have plenty of fun contrasting modern attitudes with the gloriously irresponsible world of 1980s teenagers.

10. PRIMATE (2025)
Some horror movies require paragraphs of explanation.
This one requires three words:
CHIMP. GOES. BAD.
A family's pet chimp contracts rabies and transforms what should have been a relaxing Hawaiian vacation into a survival nightmare.
That's it.
That's your movie.

BONUS: DON'T BREATHE (2016)
Three thieves decide to rob a blind man.
Easy money, right?
Wrong.
Very, very wrong.
Stephen Lang plays the homeowner, and what begins as a seemingly simple robbery quickly becomes an incredibly tense game of survival inside one house.
It's mean.
It's claustrophobic.
It's efficient.
And it proves once again that horror characters should stop breaking into people's houses.
Nothing good ever happens.
