What happens when radioactive waste, government conspiracies, and flesh-eating sewer monsters collide beneath New York City? You get C.H.U.D. (1984), one of the strangest cult horror movies of the VHS era. And somehow, this is my FIRST time watching it!

๐ŸŽƒ I'M BACK, GHOULS, GOBLINS, FIENDS, AND FIENDETTES!

Welcome to SPOILAWEEN on Binge-Watchers Podcast with Johnny Spoiler, where we're digging up forgotten horror movies, revisiting cult classics, and deciding what deserves a BINGE NOW, BINGE LATER, or BINGE NEVER.

Someone told me if you say "Johnny Spoiler" three times, I'll appear and spoil your movie. Well, somebody must've said it because here I am!

This week, we're going underground for a first-time review of C.H.U.D. (1984), plus a bizarre mermaid horror comedy, the latest horror movie headlines, a controversial Street Fighter trailer, and some seriously strange Hollywood trivia.

๐ŸงŸ C.H.U.D. (1984) โ€” FIRST-TIME WATCH & REVIEW

Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Yes, that's actually what C.H.U.D. stands for.

Directed by Douglas Cheek and starring John Heard, Daniel Stern, Christopher Curry, and Kim Greist, this 1984 sci-fi horror movie follows a series of mysterious disappearances beneath the streets of New York City.

Something is living in the sewers. Something hungry.

As a photographer and homeless shelter manager investigate, they discover a sinister government operation dumping radioactive waste beneath Manhattan. The result? Mutated underground monsters with glowing eyes and a taste for human flesh.

But is C.H.U.D. actually worth watching more than 40 years later?

Here's what surprised me:

The opening is genuinely effective. John Heard and Daniel Stern give committed performances, treating a ridiculous premise like a serious conspiracy thriller. And when the fully formed C.H.U.D. creatures finally appear, they look surprisingly good.

There's something inherently creepy about wondering what's growing beneath our cities, especially when nobody wants to acknowledge what's down there.

I had already experienced the completely different comedy approach of C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D., but the original takes its monsters much more seriously.

And yes, a few moments actually surprised me.

๐Ÿ”ฅ JOHNNY SPOILER'S VERDICT: BINGE NOW!

A mild Binge Now. The mildest Binge Now imaginable. Barely!

But between the creature effects, committed performances, creepy underground setting, and a couple of unexpected moments, C.H.U.D. earned its recommendation.
