EAT AND RUN: The 400-Pound Alien Who Only Eats Italians?! | Weird ’80s Movie Night
🍝👽 A 400-POUND ALIEN LANDS IN NEW YORK CITY…AND STARTS EATING ITALIANS.
Not Italian food. ITALIANS.
Welcome back to Binge-Watchers Podcast with Johnny Spoiler, where we find the movies you forgot existed, the movies you probably shouldn't watch, and occasionally a movie so completely insane that we have no choice but to talk about it.
Tonight’s movie is EAT AND RUN, the bizarre 1986 sci-fi horror-comedy about Murray, a massive humanoid alien who arrives in New York City and discovers his favorite food happens to be the residents of Little Italy.
And somehow, that description barely scratches the surface.
🎬 EAT AND RUN (1986) — MOVIE REVIEW
Detective Mickey McSorely investigates a string of disappearances and becomes convinced that an extraterrestrial visitor is eating people.
Nobody believes him.
Meanwhile, Murray just keeps eating.
The alien gets arrested. He goes to court. He gets released on bail. He starts dating a judge. And eventually the detective trying to STOP THE MAN-EATING ALIEN manages to get himself into legal trouble.
This is the kind of movie the 1980s gave us.
Johnny digs into the strange history and trivia behind Eat and Run, including:
🍝 Why Murray specifically eats Italians
👽 The movie’s completely ridiculous alien premise
🎬 Why it’s sometimes listed as a 1986 movie and sometimes associated with 1987
📼 Its connection to New World Pictures
🎭 Ron Silver playing Detective Mickey McSorely
🗑️ Murray actor Pat Ryan’s connection to the cult classic Street Trash
😂 The movie’s bizarre mixture of detective story, sci-fi, horror, parody, slapstick and farce
🎤 The Luciano Pavarotti gag
⚖️ Murray somehow getting his freedom while the detective gets himself charged
❤️ One of the strangest judge/alien/detective romantic situations ever committed to film
⏱️ And whether even an 85-minute movie can overstay its welcome.
THE VERDICT?
🍿 BINGE LATER.
The premise is wonderfully stupid and there are some genuinely bizarre moments, but most of the kills happen off-screen and the movie is surprisingly tame considering that its entire premise involves a giant extraterrestrial eating human beings.
It’s weird. It’s obscure. It’s ridiculous.
That also means cult-movie fans probably need to experience it at least once.
🔥 HOME VIDEO HEADLINES
Before we start eating our way through Little Italy, Johnny hits this week’s entertainment headlines.
🌕 NICK NOLTE + MILO GIBSON GET WEREWOLF WEIRD
We look at Vested, an indie horror movie set in a decaying mountain town where a fractured family discovers that its violent history may be connected to a bloodline curse—and the full moon.
📺 SECRET LIVES OF MORMON WIVES DRAMA
Mikayla Matthews says her departure from Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives came after learning Taylor Frankie Paul was returning to filming.
Naturally, this sends Johnny into a completely unrelated Utah story involving a road trip, Mount Ogden, a Yellowstone filming location, steak specials, and some questionable life decisions.
🎭 THE MUSICAL
We also talk about The Musical, starring Will Brill, Gillian Jacobs and Rob Lowe.
The movie follows frustrated playwright and middle-school theater teacher Doug Leibowitz, who discovers his ex is dating his rival and decides to sabotage the guy by staging the most wildly inappropriate school musical imaginable.
A director friend told Johnny that this sounded like a movie Johnny would make.
After hearing the premise?
He may have a point.
🎵 JOHNNY’S STAFF PICK: MUSIC AND LYRICS
Need something considerably less likely to involve extraterrestrial cannibalism?
Johnny’s staff pick is Music and Lyrics (2007) starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore.
Hugh Grant plays washed-up 1980s pop star Alex Fletcher, who gets an unexpected opportunity for a comeback when he's asked to write a new hit. There's just one problem: melodies are his thing. Lyrics aren't.
Enter Drew Barrymore.
The two stumble into a songwriting partnership, romantic chemistry, and one of those fake '80s pop soundtracks that's far catchier than it has any business being.
